Lost ABS/DTC

Postby PicS1RR on Thu May 24, 2012 8:22 pm

Hey folks, was wondering if anyone might be able to help with this one...

Just after my 1000 km service, I began losing the ABS/DTC on the bike. This then turned consistent and it is now in with BMW but they are having a hard time fixing the problem. As suspected, there was a bad front wheel speed sensor which has been replaced. The software was checked and is up to date but the DTC continues to not work. No pinched wires were found, fuses are okay, sensors and reading rings were checked and cleaned.

The problem shows itself with the diagnostic test never finishing (light continues flashing until finally shut off by me). The ABS simply shows a solid warning light and doesn't even test itself on start up. Trying to change the status of both does nothing.

The dealership is consulting Germany (thankfully under warranty still) but I was wondering if anyone has had anything similar which might point us in a direction to look.

Thanks in advance.

I am sure they'll get it resolved. once they get in touch with germany, they'll do a serious of tests until the situation is fixed. the RR is a very important bike for BMW, so they'll take these matters seriously. please fill us in on the outcome. :)

Thanks Shiva,

If you recall, a big part of going to the BMW was this site and the good things I had heard (you quoted my post on the home page under PiccRR). I'm hoping it works out but the first attempt out of Germany didn't work.

They are now sending some kind of special diagnostic tool to try again. Frustrating but hopeful. Apparently this is a new one for them to work out.

Fingers crossed...

SEVEN WEEKS!!!

I have been trying to be patient and not wanted to fly off the handle..BUT...it's been seven weeks since my bike worked properly! BMW still has it as they wait now for more parts to arrive from Germany. The really frustrating part of all of this is it seems no one can make a move here without BMW Germany directing and approving it which just causes delay after delay. As this is my first BMW, is it always like this?!?

It feels as though AG either does not trust its' own technicians around the world or does not supply the tools (diagnostic equipment) for them to do their job properly. It's really frustrating that after 3 years, there seems to be no parts or equipment around to diagnose and fix them.

The numerous little fixes that have been suggested by BMW have just eaten up time and destroyed my summer with the new bike. 3 weeks holidays and other events the bike was going to be used for are gone. It was even going to lead a major charity event here and likely be used in press photos/videos. Opportunity lost for BMW.

To be fair, they did give me an RR demo bike a couple of weeks ago but it's not mine and just not the same.

Attempts so far have been:
sensors
reading rings
calibration
wiring and connections

This does not seem like a list that should take this amount of time.

Now the brain of the system is being replaced but it hasn't arrived yet.

Shiva mentioned that the bike was important to them but I am not feeling as though I am.

I am seriously regretting my decision. I hope the rest of you are having better luck.

There may be an end in sight...

Unfortunately, the latest fixes haven't worked either, however, it looks like BMW is stepping up. As we enter week ten of this, they are prepping a 2012 for me. I still don't know what the terms are but at least there seems to be an upcoming conclusion to this.

Fingers crossed.

Well, an end to the ordeal occurred today. Took delivery of a 2012. Thanks to BMW for stepping up.
Took a while but I get that. Just frustrating given the amount of time these things can take.

Anyway, happy that things should be better now. Heading to the GP in Indianapolis so won't get to play with it until I get back.
Not a bad problem to have.

Better luck with the new one mate. It would be good to find out what the problem was with the old one, but it sounds like all avenues have been exhausted. Was it a straight swap over, or did it cost you???

Thanks mate,

Straight swap and they included the grips.

Now to see Stoner kick -rse one last time in person. Wouldn't it be great to see him appear in WSBK on an S1000RR next year?

How do you guys keep making such great riders down under?

Shit yeah! I think he's going to have a bit of time out first though - fatherhood, etc. The rumours here suggest he's going into V8 racing, but we'll see...

Well then, this one is for you. Took this at Indy last year. Saw it happening and couldn't believe I got the shot.

Dirt tracks are one thing, avoiding critters will also make you a better rider.

Stoner and Friend, enjoy.

Sorry for the late chime in... but glad to hear your bike's problem is resolved with BMW stepping up.

It is the first time I've heard something this major happened to an S1000RR. It was a very important bike that they literally put around 600K miles combined on their test bikes including entering an endurance race on a 50K-KM bike.

I can't say much about their response times, but in a way I'm glad you ended up with a new 2012 bike. After riding one, I thought it's insane how it makes my 2010 feel like a rough bike. The 2012 feels even smoother and easier to ride... if that's even possible.

So... how's it going on the 2012 bike so far? :)
